The state is characterized by unpredictable weather and climate. In 2020, California also witnessed a record-breaking fire season, with over 4 million acres burnt. Additionally, the state has faced earthquakes, floods, drought, and severe storms over the years.

Oklahoma is third among the states with the most natural disasters in America. Oklahoma has experienced 173 federally declared natural disasters since 1953, which is fewer than California and Texas, but still more than most other states. The state frequently deals with severe weather storms, wildfires, floods, tornadoes, extreme heat and droughts, winter storms, and landslides. Harsh weather conditions and fierce storms are common in Oklahoma, including super cell thunderstorms, lightning strikes, dust storms, strong winds, large hailstones, and torrential rain. It is also located within Tornado Alley and experiences an average of 55 tornadoes annually. Some notable natural disasters in Oklahoma include the 2012 heat wave and drought, the February 2021 winter storm and cold wave and the 2022 heat wave and drought. Oklahoma had a total of 210 recorded major disasters since 1953.
