In a published article by NBC Bay Area, Ivonn Rivera, a woman from South Bay, has gained national recognition for her efforts to clean up her neighborhood in one of San Jose’s toughest areas.
She has been awarded the U.S. Conference of Bishops’ new leadership award and was flown to the nation’s capital to receive it. Rivera, an immigrant from Mexico, started her work after noticing crime and other issues in her neighborhood. With the help of her pastor and an organization called the Silicon Valley Sponsoring Committee, she organized community events and peace walks.
Recently, Vice Mayor Rosemary Kamei joined her in walking through the neighborhood. Rivera’s efforts have resulted in slow improvements, including promises from city hall for more resources like street lighting.
