Neighborhoods in San Diego have diverse districts that cater to different stereotypes, including trendy hipster areas, sophisticated locales, college student hubs, and less affluent regions. While neighborhoods in San Diego are consistently ranked as one of the best places to live due to their strong economy and entertainment options, not all neighborhoods are equal.
According to a published article by the Southwest Journal, San Ysidro, one of the neighborhoods in San Diego, is a district that has the main issue of a high unemployment rate of 9.2% and many residents struggling to make ends meet. Another one of the worst neighborhoods in San Diego is Palm City, despite its promising name, falls short of expectations.
Memorial, another one of the neighborhoods in San Diego deemed as dangerous that is located southeast of downtown San Diego, faces similar economic challenges. Oak Park, one of the neighborhoods in San Diego that is about a 15-minute drive from the coastal tourist attractions, suffers from a stagnant job market, with 6.1% of the population unemployed.
Fifth on the list of the worst neighborhoods in San Diego is Mount Hope where the unemployment rate is 8.0% and the median income is only $37,060, causing many locals to worry about their financial situation.
San Diego As A Place For Retirees
In a published article by Axios, San Diego’s sunny weather may be attractive for retirees looking for an active lifestyle, but it is ranked as one of the least desirable cities in the US to retire.
This is mainly due to its expensive housing costs, which make it challenging for people in different stages of life, including Gen Z renters, first-time homebuyers, and retirees.
U.S. News & World Report named San Diego the 115th best place to retire out of 150 major US cities for 2024. The median home price in San Diego is $915,000, which is about 2.2 times higher than the national average.
San Diegans are willing to pay these elevated prices, often called the “sunshine tax,” as it is considered the cost of enjoying a year-round temperate climate.
Respondents indicated that affordability, particularly housing costs, was the most important factor when choosing a retirement destination. San Diego scored 3.5 out of 10 for housing affordability and 5.9 out of 10 for healthcare.
