Shelton’s unorthodox journey to tennis greatness began with football at 12 or 13. He took tennis seriously after seeing his sister play in tournaments. Shelton chose the University of Florida to grow up near home, even though tennis traditionally celebrates adolescent victors.

In 2022, Shelton won the NCAA singles title with his dad coaching at UF. He feels fresh at 21 since he delayed his career to avoid burnout. Shelton, with his six-foot-four size and rocket-like serve, is becoming a well-rounded player. Dad has coached him since June last year, emphasizing a unique player-coach relationship.

In preparation for his second Australian Open, Shelton credits his improved baseline play, net comfort, and movement. He doesn’t reveal his intentions in the press to avoid criticism.
