The Tragic Events Unfold
Tragically, four University of Idaho students were brutally killed, throwing the normally calm town of Moscow, Idaho, into chaos. The case was so sad and “complex” that it left everyone in the community shocked. Early in November, the bodies of Madison Mogen (21), Kaylee Goncalves (21), Xana Kernodle (20), and Kernodle’s boyfriend Ethan Chapin (20) were discovered at an off-campus home. The town was shocked and the police were scrambling to find answers.
Many people gave the FBI a lot of tips, and people all over the country started looking for signs. The fact that there was no obvious suspect or murder weapon made the case even more mysterious. Concerns and rumors in the community hit a fever pitch until, almost seven weeks later, an unexpected breakthrough led to the arrest of a Pennsylvania doctoral student in criminal justice. Investigators may have reached a stopping point with the arrest. Bill Thompson, the prosecuting attorney for Latah County, called it a “new beginning.”
A careful schedule was used to put together the events that led up to that terrible night. From the last places two of the victims were seen, at a fraternity party and a sports bar, to the horrifying discovery of their bodies and the preliminary autopsy results that showed how horrible the attacks were, every detail made a horrifying picture of what was happening.

Emotional Vigil for the Victims
A gathering was held in honor of the victims, where family and friends came together to mourn their deaths and demand justice. Steven Goncalves, Kaylee’s father, spoke with great emotion, describing how close Kaylee and Mogen were and how determined he was to see justice done for their premature deaths.
The arrest gave people in the community some hope after a terrible event, but the search for justice was far from over. The people who died in this senseless act of violence will not be forgotten as the community fights for closure and justice.
