Saban, 72, revitalized Alabama’s football program in 2007 and made it a major force. During his stellar career, Alabama won six national titles and LSU one in 2003. Saban’s teams led the AP poll for 15 straight seasons, exceeding Miami’s seven-year record.
According to Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne, Saban is “one of the greatest coaches of all time, in any sport.” After nine SEC titles, Saban won his first national title with Alabama in 2009 with a 14-0 record. His titles came in 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017, and 2020. Significantly, Saban’s teams won at least 10 games in his final 16 seasons.
After losing to Michigan in overtime in a Rose Bowl College Football Playoff semifinal, Saban’s final season ended without a championship. His influence went beyond wins, impacting the coaching careers of Georgia’s Kirby Smart, Texas’ Steve Sarkisian, and Mississippi’s Lane Kiffin.

Nick Saban’s Retirement Marks the End of an Era in College Football
Saban retired as college football is changing, with questions about players benefitting from their achievements. Colorado head coach Deion Sanders tweeted that “College Football just lost the GOAT,” underlining Saban’s effect on the sport.
Terry Saban, Nick’s wife, posted about these developments, citing her husband’s “process” of hard work, discipline, and self-improvement.
While Saban retires, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey thinks he may return to collegiate football. The sport changes, but Saban’s legacy remains his coaching skills and passion for his teams. Nick Saban’s retirement ended an era in college football where he had unmatched success and influence.
