Dispute Turns Deadly in Northwest Gainesville, Culminates in High-Speed Pursuit and Capture
James Tate, the suspected gunman, was arrested after a high-speed chase on Interstate 75 after a deadly shooting in Northwest Gainesville. At 4720 Northwest 16th Place in Suburban Heights, Marvin Anthony Miller Jr. was found shot. Unexpectedly, both the suspect and the victim were home improvement professionals.
The Gainesville Police searched for a silver Chevrolet work pick-up after receiving a gunfire report at 2:20 a.m. on Thursday. Gainesville Police, Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, and Columba County Sheriff’s Office continued the high-speed pursuit. The sheriff’s dash camera footage shows the chase ending in a wreck in Columbia County.
The motivation for the shooting is unknown, however Tate and Miller were residing at the home during renovations. Tate, a Miller employee, shot the victim and chased another contractor out of the house with gunfire. Residents are shocked, raising worries about security and background checks for visitors.

Safety concerns arise from the rental property’s turn into a crime scene and the necessity for tougher entry controls. It shocked Suburban Heights residents, who thought the area was calm.
Tate, in detention at the Columbia County Jail for fleeing and eluding, faces extradition to Alachua County for Miller’s murder on a $5 million bond. The incident shows how unpredictability may upset peaceful areas.
