According to court filings, the alleged “Long Island Serial Killer” spoke to the relatives of one of his victims at least five times two months after her reported disappearance.
In the infamous Long Island cold case, Rex Heuermann, a 59-year-old married father of two who works as an architect in Manhattan, was apprehended and charged with the killings of three of the four victims known as the “Gilgo Beach Murders” victims. Heuermann was believed to be the Long Island serial killer at the time.
Heuermann’s bail application, which listed his alleged criminal acts, claims that he contacted Melissa Barthelemey’s family on July 17, July 23, August 5, August 19, and August 26, 2009, among other dates. According to the Long Island serial killer’s bail application, he reportedly informed the 24-year-old woman’s family that he murdered her after sexually assaulting her.

Barthelemey’s phone called cell sites in Babylon, New York in order to check her voicemail, roughly 15 miles from where her corpse was discovered on Gilgo Beach in December 2010. The outbound calls were recorded on July 11 and July 12, 2009. In December 2010, the bodies of Megan Waterman, Amber Costello, and Maureen Brainard-Barnes were also discovered along the shore.
The “Gilgo Beach Murder” victims of the Long Island serial killer reportedly did the same things for a living and they all died almost the same way, as stated by Raymond Tierney, the District Attorney of Suffolk County, during a press conference last Friday.
The Long Island serial killer entered a not-guilty plea to all six murder charges. For each victim, he was accused of first- and second-degree murder. The county district attorney anticipates filing additional charges as authorities try to connect the Long Island serial killer to the murder of Brainard-Barnes.
