August 1st to September 30th, 2023, will be the application period for Veterinary Loan Repayment Program. In December 2023, the State Veterinary Education Board will study, choose, and announce the prize winners.

In a recently published article from Dalton Daily Citizen, Commissioner Tyler Harper stated: “We’re grateful the General Assembly has invested in GVELRP, and I am looking forward to seeing the high caliber, talented veterinarians utilize this program to provide their expertise and service in our rural communities. For Georgia’s agricultural producers, ranchers, and rural communities, having access to high-quality veterinary care is more important than ever. As a veterinary loan repayment program, the GVELRP is a crucial part of our efforts to solve the state’s rural veterinarian shortage.

For veterinarians willing to give at least 20 hours per week of veterinary care for at least a year in specified rural counties for food animals in shortage regions around the state, the GVELRP, as a Veterinary Loan Repayment Program, offers financial assistance in the form of student debt payback. Only applicants who now work or plan to work in rural counties with a population of 35,000 people or less will be considered for an award.

To qualify for this Veterinary Loan Repayment Program applicants must:

  • either be a legal resident or a citizen of the United States
  • be a Georgia resident
  • Be a veterinarian in active practice or a student in their final year of school

Other disqualification cases for applicants of this Veterinary Loan Repayment Program

In an article published by AllOnGeorgia, candidates who signed up for the GVELRP as a Veterinary Loan Repayment Program or the USDA cancellable loan program during the same contractual period will not be qualified, but they are urged to take advantage of upcoming opportunities.

The $90,000 Veterinary Loan Repayment Program budget, which allows up to $18,000 in award payments for up to five award recipients, was approved by the Georgia General Assembly. The applicant’s designated student loans will be paid off first by the Georgia Student Finance Commission.
