Diagnostic Dilemma: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome vs. Long COVID

In a recent report featured by the US News, in December 11, 2023, Dr. Elizabeth Unger, chief of the chronic viral diseases branch at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, emphasizes that the condition’s prevalence is fueled, in part, by long COVID sufferers. However, this number might be an underrepresentation, as experts believe a significant fraction of individuals with chronic fatigue syndrome remains undiagnosed, partly due to the absence of approved drugs and treatment guidelines

Dr. Daniel Clauw, director of the University of Michigan’s Chronic Pain and Fatigue Research Center, highlights the diagnostic challenges associated with chronic fatigue syndrome, citing its lack of clinical popularity and the absence of approved medications. The confusion is further compounded by the overlap with long COVID, where prolonged exhaustion mimics chronic fatigue syndrome symptoms.

While both conditions of chronic fatigue syndrome may share similarities, long COVID is more readily accepted by medical professionals and diagnosed promptly. The blurred lines between these illnesses reinforces the urgent need for comprehensive research and tailored diagnostic criteria.

Surprisingly, a higher percentage of economically disadvantaged individuals report having chronic fatigue syndrome, challenging the perception that it primarily afflicts affluent individuals. This revelation raises questions about access to healthcare and the belief in fatigue complaints, shedding light on the broader societal impact of chronic fatigue syndrome beyond conventional assumptions.
