An expert states that former Roman Catholic Cardinal Theodore McCarrick is not in the proper condition to stand trial against the sexual assault charges filed against him.
Former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick Not Fit To Stand Trial
An expert for the prosecution says that former cardinal Theodore McCarrick is not fit to stand trial against the sexual assault charges filed against him. In 1974, McCarrick was reported sexually assaulting a teenage boy at a wedding reception in Massachusetts. This week, prosecutors revealed their findings about the former cardinal’s crime to a judge, which will ultimately decide whether the former cardinal will face the sexual assault charges.
The former cardinal maintained throughout the case that he did nothing wrong. Last September 2021, he pleaded not guilty in the case. The former cardinal was also charged with sexually assaulting an 18-year-old male last April, the assault happened 45 years ago in Wisconsin.
Last February, the attorneys of the former cardinal asked the court to dismiss the case. The attorneys added that a psychiatry and behavioral science professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine had examined the former cardinal and diagnosed him with dementia, most likely Alzheimer’s.

McCarrick’s Inevitable Fate
At the time, the attorneys of the former cardinal stated that he was having a “limited understanding” of the charges filed against him and that the cognitive difficulties he is currently facing were a hindrance to him in seeking legal counsel and defending himself against the charges.
To aid themselves in the former cardinal’s case, prosecutors brought in an expert to assess the former cardinal. The results of McCarrick’s assessment have not yet been revealed to the public. The judge set August 30 to conduct a hearing regarding the former cardinal’s assessment. McCarrick is now charged with indecent assault and battery on a person. McCarrick was not exempted from facing the charges since he is no longer covered by the statute of limitations ever since he left Massachusetts.
